IMPORTANT UPDATE: THE SATURDAY FORECAST IS RAIN ALL DAY, SO I'M MOVING THIS EVENT TO SUNDAY. ALL OTHER DETAILS ARE THE SAME.
PLEASE CHANGE YOUR RSVP IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT.
Let's go for a nice afternoon walkabout along the Potomac River near Georgetown, including the nature preserve on Roosevelt Island. We did this last year and it was a great time!
This scenic walk is a big loop crossing two famous bridges on the Potomac and offering fine views of Georgetown, the Lincoln Memorial, Roosevelt Island, and the Kennedy Center. Afterwards, we'll visit Bangkok Joe's at Washington Harbor in Georgetown for some refreshments and tasty Thai food.
Meetup at Nick's Riverside Grill
We begin by meeting up at Nick's Riverside Grill next to the new Georgetown Waterfront Park. It's right on the riverfront down the hill from K Street under the Whitehurst Freeway.
Yes, Rev. Jake is aware that Nick's is a rip-off tourist joint with bad food, but don't fret. We're not staying or eating there. Mainly, it's got a great scenic location on the Potomac River for us to meet up and start our walk. We can gather inside where it's warm and people can admire the views of Roosevelt Island and the Kennedy Center. Nick's also offers food and refreshments for those who want to prepare themselves for our journey.
Full details about Nick's are here:
Volksmarching (from the German Volksmarsch meaning "peoples' march") is a form of non-competitive group fitness walking that developed in Europe and has since spread to the United States. Participants typically walk 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) on an outdoor path to a favorite destination, while sharing the company of fellow walkers who enjoy getting out for some exercise and fresh air in a natural environment.
A Volksmarch is not a race, although Volksmarching associations usually offer incentive awards such as pins to record their achievments. People walk at a pace that works to make the event fun for everyone.
Walking the Potomac Riverfront
Leaving Nick's, our Volksmarch will go through the park and up the hill to M Street where we can cross Key Bridge to Rosslyn. We'll pick up the Mt. Vernon Trail that goes to the pedestrian bridge over to Roosevelt Island where we can explore its nature trails.
Leaving Roosevelt Island, we'll continue walking along the river on the Mt. Vernon Trail to Memorial Bridge that takes us over to the Washington side. Then we'll follow the paved riverside path past the Kennedy Center back to Georgetown.
The total walking distance will be approximately 5 miles, mostly on paved paths and sidewalks. The trails on Roosevelt Island are natural surface (i.e. dirt), so wear shoes that can handle possible muddy conditions.
Bangkok Joe's is a cool Thai restaurant near the waterfront at Georgetown Harbor. It's trendy and modern, but also casual and comfy with excellent food and exotic drinks like the Bangkok Swing.
Our group's standard policy at restaurants and elsewhere is for SHR members to order and pay for their food and drinks individually. We don't make group reservations due to the uncertainties and "flash mob" nature of Meetups. As individual customers, we get better service and no hassles about splitting checks. So plan to order and pay as you normally would, and then we'll socialize together as we always do...

You can get to this event by taking Metro to either Foggy Bottom or Rosslyn, and then walking to Georgetown Waterfront Park. If you drive, there are public garages and street parking under the Whitehurst Freeway on K Street. Or you can park for free at the Roosevelt Island lot and walk over Key Bridge to meet us at Nick's.
As this is an outdoor event, we'll need good walking weather. I'll post a notice here and send out an email by 10:00 am on Sunday morning if we need to change plans or cancel the event. Call Jake at 703-798-8435 with any questions or to find us.
I hope to see you there!
