We've been here several times along the Tioga Road on Hwy 120 in Yosemite National Park. Olmsted Point (note the spelling) looks down on Yosemite Valley from the east--and shows Half Dome from a very different angle. The white granite against the dark sky was awesome during the late summer afternoon - we could hear thunder in the distance. The hike is pretty short and worth the stop - the route along the easy to walk on granite takes you down a slight ravine filled with pines and then back up along a rocky ridge for some spectacular views of Yosemite. It's an amazing demonstration of glacial rock carving with deep cracks, huge boulders or "bubbles" just left over as the glacier receded. Another place in the US you can see evidence of this kind of glacial activity is on Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park in Maine. Just sit on one of the boulders and take in the view. Not to miss!
