A must do in Yosemite. We have hiked this twice. Once on June 14th, 2000 and again on June 30th, 2006. In 2000 Ansel Adam's dead Jeffrey pine at the top was still standing; in 2006, it was laying on its side. Both times had great weather. The hike is easy and has fantastic 360 degree view at the top. You can access this trail from Glacier Point or via the road to Glacier point. We used the roadside parking both times. The hike was a gradual climb or flat to the base of a domed peak overlooking the valley and distant mountains. Lots of granite everywhere. The first time we also took the Taft Trail to the fissures at Taft Point. The trail down was easy, but the hike back was more demanding. Taft was a scary place, with thin tubular railings not as safe as the wide rock and rails at Glacier Point (I believe they have added better railings since then, but am not sure). One unknowing step into a fissure (you can see them) and you are a goner. I don't recommend children under 7 hiking the Taft trail. As for Sentinel Dome, it is a don't miss!

The trail up Sentinel Dome is short and sweet, A nice walk more than a hike. I did it as a sunset hike. I started late in the afternoon, and waited at the top for the sun to set. The setting sun was magic on the distant slopes, lighting Half Dome, Mt. Starr King, and the distant Merced Peak region in shades of magenta and gold. When I hiked it the Jeffery Pine photographed by Ansel Adams was still standing. It fell over later that year. Still it's a wonderful hike, especially at sunset. Carry a flashlight though, the hike back will be in the dark.

Absolutely amazing, a 360 degree view of yosemite over 8000 feet high. One of the greatest views I have ever seen!

As a former resident of the Yosemite area, this was always the first hike I would show to visiting friends. Bar none, it offers the best views (360 degrees, at that) for the least work. It's a shame the legendary Jeffrey Pine tree came down a few years back but this is still one of the best hikes in the park. If you make your way up Glacier Point Road, don't miss it!

Amazing views, especially at sunset and night. Make this a more exciting hike - go to Taft Point, then head to Glacier Point and on the way back hit Sentinel Dome.

Glacier Point road is still closed at Badger Pass. Snow levels at Badger Pass are probably 10-14 ft! I wouldn't count on Glacier Point road opening until Memorial weekend or later. Lots of snow above 6,000 FT. Best way to get to Glacier Point and Sentinel Dome would probably be the 4-mile trail. As of this weekend the 4-mile trail is closed, but I would expect it to open by the end of the month or early May. The hike to Sentinel Dome is a great hike with a great view. Not a difficult hike from Glacier Point Road.

I have hiked to the top of Sentinel Dome about half a dozen times - it is a fine way to show newcomers and less experienced hikers great views of the high country. If you have some in the group who want to hike and some who don't or can't, a good variation is to let off the hikers who can continue over the top and on to Glacier Point to meet up with the non-hikers.
