I took friends from out-of-town on this trail. They couldn't believe they were so close to Washington DC. It is beautiful any time of year.

The scenery on this hike was pretty. It's dog-friendly and has a creek that crosses the path. That being said, the trails were really confusing to follow. It intersects a busy road twice and was not well marked.

This is definitely one of my favorites in the area. It can get very crowded on a nice day, but it comes with the territory around DC. The nearby views of the falls are great, and the Billy Goat Trail is a short but challenging alternative to the flat and kind of boring C&O Canal.

My colleagues and I have produced a cinematic feature that delves into the majesty of Great Falls, Virginia.

Enjoy,

Great hike, especially with kids because they can scramble around on rocks instead of just walking. We usually go when it's cold out so haven't seen much in the way of crowds. Also the trail to the left as you cross the canal is less-crowded.

A very nice trail, but quite close to everything in Washington DC, so if its a nice day and you don't arrive super early, prepare for some ridiculous crowds. The rock scrambles can be tough and kind of annoying in places, but it was fun and very beautiful. Just make sure you arrive as early as possible.

This trail is a blast! Can get very crowded on a nice day. Great views of the river below and the trail on the opposite side. You have the ability to get off the trail at several different points so there are lots of options for distance. It is very rocky and there are several places where you have to climb or descend steep areas.

Pretty!!
Easy.
Confusing trails.

All Trails app has no data but a Track shows up. - Follow it, it's the best route.

Trail maps here:

I mostly followed the Track above. I recommend following it - it's the best route if you want to avoid annoying River rd noise.

Blockhouse Point Park trails are well marked and have blue blazes. Western sections of the Track fall outside the park trail system.

Start: Pennyfield lock parking lot. Walk back north on Pennyfield Lock rd - look out for mowed path on left a short way up.

Pennyfield to River Rd Parking: Busy trail, well marked.

River rd to Callithea Trail: follow Track south on the pipeline gap to Upland Woods Trail and connect to Blockhouse Trail on any of the connectors (Fawn, Turkey Fan, Spring House).

DO take Blockhouse Trail to end, viewpoint for lovely views (not on the track). Double back to pick up Callithea trail.
DO take Paw Paw trail to end, viewpoint for gorgeous views. Double back to Callithea trail.
CAUTION: Cliffs on both of the viewpoints above. Exercise care with dogs and children.

TRAIL UNMARKED at the end of Callithea - follow well defined path on track to an obvious split in the path at a pretty glade (with old corrugated pipe). I made a left here. Path follows edge of C&O park territory to Violette's Lock rd.

Turn south on Violettes and east on towpath. This is a super pretty stretch. You can get down to the river with a little bit of scrambling to enjoy the rocks if the river is low ( be careful!).

Fun hiking. First 10 minutes up the mountain is moderate to hard. Probably moderate. After that flat loop. You'll see more deer than people. Some historical landmarks. Good way to spend an hour or so.

We tried to hike it on a Sunday morning. Potentially a great trail, but it was busier than going to a shopping mall. You need good shoes on this trail as it goes over a lot of rocks. We are going to try and hike during a less busy time of the year.
