This trail is not for the faint hearted. Great views of the gorge, the waterfall and the lush plant life. The trail is quite rocky and the transverse climb can be challenging for those who have knee or hip problems. All in all, you can opt to stop at great high points overlooking the water and have some lunch or just do the entire trail for the love of hiking and workout rolled into one.
Start early to beat the heat and the crowd, especially on weekends.

Very enjoyable and unexpected trek with plenty of rocky scrambling. The best part is the views. Such beautiful scenery just a stone's throw from dc.

It's an overall enjoyable series of trails. Well marked--just not anything special of note. It's a decent workout for a trail-run. Just don't expect to be wowed by anything.

An excellent 4 mile moderate to strenuous hike with a few interesting rock scrambles and nice views of the Potomac. The Visitor Center warns hikers about one of the rock scrambles which is definitely a bit challenging but manageable if you take your time. We completed the hike in 2 hrs. After completing the Billy Goat trail, it is worth taking a quick 10-15 minute side trip to the Falls (you will see signs a few minutes from the Visitor Center). We went on a Friday morning and it was moderately crowded. We heard there was a one hour wait the next day so we suggest taking this hike on a weekday or early in the morning.

One of my favorite trails to date, but heavily used. Go very early if possible. Have hiked the rocky part in both directions and in all seasons. Surprisingly pleasant in winter. Just wear lots of layers. In summer, bring PLENTY OF WATER since the rocks aren't shaded. I always bring a snack too, and now use my Camelback so my hands remain free to scramble those rocks to my heart's content. A few spots are tricky, but you can adjust the difficulty by which routes you take (some cliff edges, and almost completely vertical crevices are tucked away here and there for a challenge). Lots of spots to hang out and take in the view. One side note: if you're going from the rocky trail back toward the canal path (or vice versa) via the woods, be careful in the summer. I ran into Stinging Nettle. Ouch.
