Mount Watatic Trail

This hike technically starts at the parking area on Rte 119 in Ashburnham, MA across from Old Pierce Rd. and is the southern trail-head for the Wapack Trail ( a contraction of Watatic and North Pack Monadnock coined by the trail's founders in 1922) whose terminus is 21.9 mi. north at the northern base of North Pack Monadnock. The 3 mile loop referred to herein begins at the parking lot on Rte. 119, and ascends gradually the southwest slopes of Watatic. At .3 mi. the trail intersects with the State Line Trail, which bears left and re-connects with the Wapack .9 mi north; but the preferred way to the summit is right, on the Wapack Trail. It is a short distance up, mostly traversing the slope, over rock ledges and along a stone wall. The footing is sure, but the trail is moderate at times: it is not easy all the way up. The summit is achieved via pretty, grassy edged paths which have leveled off once there. Beautiful views for a 1,800 ft. summit, and less than a half mile to the east, a protruding additional lower peak, East Watatic provides even better views: Wachusett to the west, Temple, Pack Monadnock and North Pack Monadnock to the northwest. The return loop brings you back over the true summit and down the north elbow of the Wapack Trail over Nutting Hill Ledge (1.0 mi.), which has varied and very pretty terrain, to the intersection of State Line Trail (bears left off Wapack) which takes you .9 mi. south back to the trailhead on Rte. 119. With a leisurely lunch on the eastern peak, a wonderful 3 hour hike!

Great day hike with fantastic views! Gets a little crowded, so avoid weekends or start later than 1pm

It's a great trail, but the map is way off. The marker is a couple of hundred yards from the parking lot & trailhead.

Great hike for everyone! Not very challenging, and yet the reward at the apex is a wonderful vista. Took us 3hrs & 15mins going relatively slow and stopping a few times for stretching and snacks.

If you are out of shape, you could still do this hike and really enjoy the whole experience.

Hiked all my life. Nearing 70 so slowing down a bit. Mt Watatic multiple times and all seasons. Sometimes with small grandchildren. Always with 14 year old, small, 4 legged princess except in dead of winter. Nice easy hike for exercise and peace of mind. Everything said in other reviews is true. Nothing to add other than confirm parking is limited and can be very crowded on weekends and holidays. Being fairly local and retired those concerns are not a problem but would be with a family to see foliage. I've met younger people who run the trails daily for exercise so not terribly difficult. A real gem.

My daughter and hiked a portion of this trail while on vacation. We really enjoyed the hike. Overcast day so views were not fantastic. Great exercise and very enjoyable hike. Would love to return when leaves are turning.

Nice easy trail; I'm by no means a seasoned hiker and I completed in about an hour and a half or so. (I came up the Wapack and down State Line.) The views from the summit are really something. My main gripe would be how crowded it was–there were nearly always other hikers in my line of sight for the duration of the hike. While I'm not sure it's one I would feel the need to revisit anytime soon, I think it would be great for walking the dog, or a good option for a family with young kids.

Came up the dirt road trail from the nh side. Was a good long steep trail to walk up. Came to the top to c a great view then walked over to the further out hump at the top to c a even better view! Great place to hike with friends for a good 360 view!

I'm certainly not an experienced hiker but here are my two cents. My wife and I have recently made a commitment to hit more trails and more often. We started off our 2013 year with a hike up Mt. Watatic. We got there nice and early around 9AM which I really recommend, on our descent we came across a lot of people heading up and there were many cars parked on RT. 119. We ascended on the State Line Trail (marked blue) and descended on the Wapack Trail (marked yellow). Overall a great hike, pitch was moderate and there were no real footing issues. On the way down there were certainly some rocks and tree roots but if you pay attention you're good to go. The summit is beautiful and we were blessed with great visibility. Like I said, I am not an experienced hiker so as we hit the summit I was not aware of what was in the distance in terms of land marks and state lines.
