The Budj Bim National Park is a unique landscape with significant cultural and geological value in Victoria's south-west. The Gunditjmara Traditional Owners worked closely with this landscape and established one of the largest aquaculture ventures in Victoria. Additionally, the Budj Bim was formed from lava flows from a volcanic eruption 40,000 years ago, with the most recent eruption being approximately 8,000 years ago. These unique features have enabled this park to be protected on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the park today is also co-managed by the Indigenous owners to ensure country is being cared for.

Consider camping overnight at the Budj Bim Campground among the lava rocks and tall Manna Gum trees, and complete all the surrounding tracks.

From here it follows the lava flows from the basalt Budj Bim volcanic eruption 30,000 years ago through what is now a lush native bushland that provides habitat for a vibrant community of native fauna.

This outer walking trail of Lake Surprise follows the rim of the Budj Bim volcanic crater. The volcanic activity in the area dates back 40,000 years, with the most recent eruption being approximately 8,000 years ago.
