Best trails in Tortuguero National Park
Tortuguero National Park is located in northeastern Costa Rica and is a protected area, with only 1% of the park available for visitors. The small portion of the park that is open is very popular with tourists and consists of an extensive network of rivers and canals. Tortuguero means "Turtle Region" in Spanish. The park's ecosystem is so diverse that visitors can expect to see just about anything along the route. There are over 734 species of plants, 442 types of birds and 138 species of mammals, and there are even more reptiles and amphibians to see in this area. The park is an important nesting area for turtles and is a wildlife sanctuary for monkeys, jaguars and tapirs. Other animals visitors may see include crocodiles, iguanas, bats and ocelots.
