Best trails in Sanriku Fukko (reconstruction) National Park
This national park was established in May 2013 to contribute to the reconstruction of the Sanriku region, which was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. It covers approximately 220km of coastline from north to south across Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures. It is characterized by magnificent cliffs known as the "Sea Alps" in the north, and a ria coastline with a complex topography in the south.
The coast is home to many wildlife species, including seabirds such as black-tailed gulls and streaked shearwaters. It is also home to a variety of coastal plants that have adapted to the unique coastal environment, attracting many people.
One of the popular activities in Sanriku Fukko National Park is trekking/hiking along the coast. The Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail, which connects the coastline from Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture to Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, is popular with many people. In addition, a sappa boat experience tour is also held in Tanohata Village and Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture.
This area is also famous for its fresh seafood. You can enjoy fresh seafood at fishing ports such as Hachinohe, Miyako, Kamaishi, Ofunato, and Kesennuma, which boast some of the largest catches in Japan. This national park, which is unique in Japan and was created with the aim of recovery from disasters, is also visited by people from all over the country for disaster prevention education.
