I completed this hike on the 17th May 2025, just after a heavy snowfall. The trail was manageable up to Zeleni Vir Lake, thanks to the well-marked path and visible footprints left by other hikers. However, once the steep ascent began, the trail became much harder to follow. With fresh snow covering the ground, I had to make my own way scrambling, uncertain if I was heading in the right direction. I ultimately decided to turn around at 2,150m because the terrain grew significantly steeper, and I completely lost sight of the trail. Although I was disappointed to cut the hike short, I recognized that I wasn’t properly equipped - my feet were soaked, I didn’t have any gloves, and I didn’t bring an ice pick. I would recommend ensuring you have the right gear if attempting this hike in snowy conditions. Entrance fee for the Durmitor National Park is €5.
We did part of this hike on 9th October. Unfortunately we could only get around half way (just past Durmitor Camp) before having to turn around as the trail got too steep to navigate safely in the snow. It was still worth it with wonderful views and the snow made it even more enjoyable until it stopped us going further. We also saw a large bear print in the snow! Decent hiking boots required.
I'd classify this as a moderate-to-hard trail. We took our car to the trail start, which is where the parking was (5e). 1st 20 mins were abruptly a hard start, then you walk straight through the rocky plains for 60 mins, very easy and lovely views. Then you actually go down a bit before starting the toughest part of the trail, which is about 1hr of uphill into the mountain and towards the peak. Last 10 mins before the peak have some cables (everything seemed in excellent conditions) and is a bit technical, so I'd recommend avoiding crowds (going up early, we began at 9 and that worked well) and taking it one step at a time in this section. Took us about 3 hours to reach the top with 3 short water stops. Incredible views of Durmitor, saw some mountain goats as well on the way back.
Nice hike with great views ! From Durmitor s camp it is possible to pursue to the ice cave.
Difficult hike. Don't do it in the rain, too risky. Beautiful views but some technical sections too difficult for me. If you have trouble with steep passages, avoid this hike. After the durmitor camp we reached the black lake. This part is easy
